Tracking the jellies! |
One of the main goals of Jellytrack is to follow the movements of jellyfish for periods of several hours to several weeks to assess if jellyfish are simply passively carried by currents or if they actively swim to maintain their position. That will give us critical information on jellyfish bloom apparition, development and distribution. |
These tags are attached to individual jellyfish to follow their movements. The entire package is designed to offer minimal resistance to the swimming jellyfish. |

Connectivity of jellyfish populations: “Jellytrack” |

In addition drogues and current meters are deployed at the same time as GPS tags in order to assess the currents close to the jellyfish. |
Central to this work is the development of cheap electronic tags that allow high precision tracking of large numbers (100+) of jellyfish. The GPS tag is housed within the float (orange cylinder) and tethered with a 5m monofilament to the jellyfish. The cable tie is attached to the peduncle that joins the swimming bell to the oral arms of the jellyfish |
